Sources and method

Dutch Hoops holds 44,914 games of the Dutch men's competitions since 1945-46, 41,549 of them with a result. A game says which source its result comes from. Where sources disagree, a fixed order decides, and the other source stays visible. Dutch Hoops is independent and not affiliated with Basketball Nederland.

What the archive covers

Per competition: how many seasons and games the archive holds, and how many of those games have a result. A season still being played counts too, with the games still to come.

Which source comes first

Where sources disagree about a result, a date or who played at home, the source with the highest rank wins. First the federation: the historical database of Basketball Nederland (db.basketball.nl). Then other archives, among them Basketball Happenings (j-dus.com). Wikipedia last. For a European game the FIBA archive comes before the federation. The lower source stays with the game, with its own value.

The oldest results in the federation's database were copied from newspapers afterwards. Where a newspaper shows a clear entry error, the newspaper can win. That is decided game by game, and the federation stays visible as a source.

For the current name and town of a club that still exists, the federation's club register decides. The name a club played under in a given season comes from the sources of that season; a current name does not overwrite it.

The source register, with each source's rank. Rank 1 is the highest; sources of equal rank weigh the same. Per source: for how many games the result comes from that source (leading), for how many it is cited, and for how many it says something else. These counts cover the whole archive, women and Oranje included. Sources we use only as a cross-check are not listed. Source names are given as the archive records them, in Dutch.

The result of 53,180 games comes from NBB-DB (db.basketball.nl), that of 9,818 from Basketball Happenings (j-dus.com, via Wayback).

Disputed or differing

A game is disputed when sources give a different result. Where the difference is only the date or who played at home, the order above decides. The game is then not disputed; the other source is shown with it as ‘differs’. At present 163 results in the men's competitions are disputed.

Definitions

  • Dutch national champion: up to 2020-21 the Eredivisie champion, from 2021-22 the best Dutch club in the BNXT League. The BNXT League's own champion is a Benelux title and not the same thing. No champion was named in 2019-20: the season was abandoned because of COVID-19.
  • Top flight: the all-time table counts the Eredivisie and the BNXT League as one continuous top flight. A separate variant leaves out the games against Belgian clubs.
  • Club names: each club appears under one fixed name. The name it played under in a season, often a sponsor's name, is shown alongside in small type.
  • Seasons are written as 1985-86: the year the season started, then the next.
  • Overtime: shown only where a complete box score or a source says so. A close final score says nothing.

How it is checked

Nothing enters the archive without a human check. What is taken from a source is a draft first, and a person reviews it before it goes online. Newspaper text is never taken over automatically.

The archive takes only facts, such as results, dates and standings, not the sources' texts or photos. Club logos are shown for identification, with their source.

Errors and corrections

Seen an error, or know a result that is missing? Report it, ideally with the source. Every report is reviewed before anything changes. Report an error.

Citing and reusing Dutch Hoops

Name Dutch Hoops (dutchhoops.com) and link to the page a figure came from. The archive grows; a page always shows its current state.

The archive as a whole may be reused under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (CC BY 4.0): copy, adapt and share it, commercially too, as long as you credit Dutch Hoops as the source. Single facts, such as a score or a date, belong to no one. Logos and photos are not covered: they keep their own rights. Read the licence (CC BY 4.0)
